What is Aether?
Peer-to-Peer Ephemeral Public Communities
Open-source, self-governing communities with auditable moderation and mod elections.
Ephemeral
Posts are retained by default for 6 months. If something is worth keeping, someone will save it within that time—but no longer than six months.
If you mess up, argue the wrong point, and then think differently, that’s okay. No one will follow you around—giving you the freedom to make mistakes and move on.
Privacy-Conscious
It’s peer-to-peer with no central servers. Thus, it’s privacy-sensitive; the source IP of any specific public post cannot (easily) be traced. Aether is private by default, so you can choose complete privacy or full publicity. Most use pseudonyms, but you can use your real name or company if you prefer.
Transparent
Moderator actions are visible to users. Nothing "disappears"—if content is removed, you’ll know who did it, why, and how to restore it if you wish.
Everyone watches the watchers. Moderation is vital for healthy communities, and Aether adds checks and balances to this process.
Democratic
Communities can elect and impeach their own mods through voting. If a mod misbehaves, users can also disable them locally.
This reverts all changes made by that mod for the user and counts as an impeachment vote.
