What is Ckan?
CKAN is designed for data publishers (national and regional governments, companies, and organizations) who wish to make their data publicly available. Developed by the non-profit Open Knowledge Foundation, CKAN is currently overseen and managed by the CKAN Association. Built with Python on the backend and Javascript on the frontend, CKAN utilizes the Pylons web framework and SQLAlchemy as its ORM. Its database engine is PostgreSQL, and its search functionality is powered by SOLR. Featuring a modular architecture, CKAN allows for the development of extensions to add extra capabilities, such as data harvesting or uploading. It employs an internal model to store metadata about various records and presents this metadata through a web interface that enables users to browse and search it. Additionally, CKAN offers a robust API, facilitating the creation of third-party applications and services around it.
