Product Information

What is Distrobox?

Use any Linux distribution inside your terminal. Achieve backward and forward software compatibility and freely utilize any distribution you prefer. Distrobox employs podman or docker to create containers with your chosen Linux distribution. The created containers are tightly integrated with the host, allowing for the sharing of the user's HOME directory, external storage, external USB devices, graphical applications (X11/Wayland), and audio. What It Does In short, it's a sleek wrapper around podman or docker for creating and launching containers that are highly integrated with the host. The Distrobox environment is based on OCI images. These images are used to create a container that seamlessly integrates with the rest of the operating system, providing access to the user's home directory, Wayland and X11 sockets, network, removable devices (such as USB sticks), systemd logs, SSH agent, D-Bus, ulimits, /dev, the udev database, and more. It implements the same concepts introduced by https://github.com/containers/toolbox but does so in a simplified manner using POSIX sh, aiming for broader compatibility. All credit goes to them for having the great idea to implement these features.
