Flagfox is an extension that displays a flag icon indicating the physical location of the current web server. Knowing where you're connecting to adds an extra layer of awareness to your browsing and can help indicate the native language and legal jurisdiction that may apply. Additional information can be accessed through numerous external lookups, and users can add their own custom actions. All actions can be added to the flag icon's context menu and set to an icon click or keyboard shortcut for quick access. Clicking the flag icon loads our default action, Geotool, which provides a detailed map showing the city where the server is located, along with other useful information such as local time and ISP. Many other actions are available for a wide range of purposes, such as: - Website security and malware checks - Finding similar sites and reviews - Automatic translation into your language - SEO and web development research - Diagnostics like ping and traceroute - Whois and DNS information - Page code validation - Quick URL shortening - Copying the server's IP address or other details Or you can create your own custom actions! Flagfox is simple, unobtrusive, and uses relatively few resources. To protect your privacy, country lookups are performed locally rather than querying an external server for every page you visit. It works by accessing an internal IP address location database, essentially a rough map of the internet's physical layout based on data provided by Maxmind. This gives you a flag for the actual location of the server you're connecting to, not just the possibly different nationality of the domain name. Flagfox provides monthly updates to keep this internal database accurate.
