What is Quickemu?
Quickly create and run highly optimized desktop VMs for Linux, macOS, and Windows—just two commands. You decide the OS to run; Quickemu figures out the best approach. Example: 'quickget ubuntu-mate impish' then 'quickemu --vm ubuntu-mate-impish.conf'. Initially, the project aimed to enable quick testing of Linux distros, with VM configs storable anywhere (e.g., external USB or home directory) and no elevated permissions required to run VMs. Quickemu now fully supports macOS and Windows. Features: • macOS Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, Mojave, and High Sierra • Windows 8.1, 10, and 11, including TPM 2.0 • Ubuntu and all official Ubuntu flavors • Debian (Bullseye with all official and non-free DE variants) • Fedora and openSUSE (Leap, Tumbleweed, MicroOS) • AlmaLinux • Linux Mint (Cinnamon, MATE, XFCE), elementary OS, Pop!_OS • Arch Linux, Kali, Garuda, ZorinOS, and NixOS • Oracle Linux and Rocky Linux • Regolith Linux (v1.6 and latest 2.0.0 prerelease) • FreeBSD and OpenBSD • Full SPICE support, including host/guest clipboard sharing • VirtIO-webdavd file sharing for Linux and Windows guests • VirtIO-9p file sharing for Linux and macOS guests • QEMU guest agent support via standard QMP commands for system-level agent access • Samba file sharing for Linux, macOS, and Windows guests (if smbd is installed on the host) • VirGL acceleration • USB device passthrough • Smart card passthrough • Automatic SSH port forwarding to guests • Network port forwarding • Full-duplex audio • EFI (with/without SecureBoot) and legacy BIOS boot • Graphical UI available. Quickemu is a wrapper for the excellent QEMU, aiming to 'do the right thing' automatically rather than expose exhaustive configuration options.
