Shelter

Shelter is a free and open-source (FOSS) application that leverages Android's "Work Profile" feature to provide an isolated space where you can install or clone apps. Shelter absolutely does not bundle any advertising/analytics/tracking SDKs. All source code is available at https://git.angry.im/PeterCxy/Shelter or mirrored at https://github.com/PeterCxy/Shelter, and the code is licensed under the WTFPL. This app relies on your Android system's implementation of the work profile. Some vendor/custom ROM implementations may have issues, potentially causing device crashes or even bricking. Xiaomi's MIUI is one such example. Currently, I do not offer support for these ROMs as I personally do not own any of these devices. If you run Shelter on such ROMs, you are on your own. If any developers own these devices and can make Shelter work on them, please submit a pull request—I’d be happy to merge it. **Features/Use Cases** - Run apps within an isolated profile so they cannot access data outside of it. - "Freeze" (disable) background-heavy or rarely used apps when you don’t need them. This is especially useful if you use apps from "certain companies." - Clone apps to use two accounts on a single device. **Caveats** Shelter is not a full sandbox implementation. It cannot protect you from: - Security vulnerabilities in the Android system or Linux kernel. - Backdoors installed in your Android system (if this concerns you, use an open-source ROM). - Backdoors embedded in firmware (this issue is unsolvable). - Any other bugs or limitations imposed by the Android system. Additionally, Shelter cannot create more than one work profile on a single Android device and cannot coexist with any other app that manages work profiles. This is due to Android system limitations, and there is nothing I can do about it.
