ChatGPT is a generative artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI and launched in 2022. It is currently based on the GPT-4O large language model (LLM). ChatGPT can generate human-like conversational responses and allows users to refine and steer the dialogue to achieve desired length, format, style, level of detail, and language. It has been credited with accelerating the AI boom, driving sustained rapid investment and public interest in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Some observers have raised concerns about ChatGPT's potential, as well as that of similar programs, to replace human intelligence, enable plagiarism, or spread misinformation. By January 2023, ChatGPT had become the fastest-growing consumer software application in history, amassing over 100 million users within two months and contributing to OpenAI's current $86 billion valuation. ChatGPT is built on OpenAI's proprietary series of generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) models and fine-tuned using a combination of supervised learning and reinforcement learning from human feedback for conversational applications. Sequential user prompts and responses are treated as context within each conversation session. Initially released as a freely available research preview, ChatGPT's popularity has led OpenAI to operate the service under a freemium model. Free-tier users have access to GPT-4O, while "Plus," "Pro," "Team," and "Enterprise" subscriptions offer additional features such as DALL-E 3 image generation, more powerful AI models, and increased usage limits.
