What is Requestpolicy?
RequestPolicy is an extension for Mozilla browsers that enhances your browsing privacy and security by controlling cross-site requests through webpage access permissions. It serves as the first comprehensive client-side protection against CSRF attacks and the initial tool to prevent cross-site information leaks in modern browsers.
By preventing other websites from tracking your browsing habits, it improves privacy. It also safeguards against cross-site request forgery (CSRF), clickjacking, and other attacks.
Cross-site requests occur when a website instructs your browser to send requests to entirely different sites. While these requests are often legitimate, they frequently allow advertising networks and other sites to monitor your browsing behavior, including specific pages you visit throughout the day. In malicious scenarios, such requests are particularly dangerous in CSRF attacks, where your browser is tricked into sending unauthorized requests that appear intentional.
With RequestPolicy, the default setting blocks all cross-site requests. When a request is denied, users are notified (the status bar icon in the bottom-right corner turns red). Clicking this icon opens a menu where users can review and adjust blocked or allowed requests. You can whitelist requests based on the originating site, destination site, or specific origin-destination pairs.
RequestPolicy is compatible with Firefox 3+, SeaMonkey 2.0, Flock 2.0, Songbird 1.0, and Fennec 1.0, supporting operating systems like Linux, BSD, Mac, and Windows.
