Product Information
What is Opensimulator?
OpenSimulator is an open-source, multi-platform, multi-user 3D application server. It can be used to create a virtual environment (or world) that is accessible through various clients and protocols—see Connections. The optional hypergrid feature allows users to access other OpenSimulator installations from their "home" setup or grid over the network, making it a foundational element for the emerging distributed metaverse. OpenSimulator empowers virtual world developers to customize their worlds using the technologies they find most effective—our framework is designed for easy expansion.
Written in C#, OpenSimulator runs on Windows via the .NET Framework and on Unix-like machines via the Mono framework. The source code is released under the BSD License, a business-friendly license that permits embedding OpenSimulator in products. If you're interested in our development history, check out History.
OpenSimulator can simulate virtual environments similar to Second Life™, but it is not intended to be a clone of the Second Life server platform. Instead, the project focuses on enabling innovative feature development for virtual environments and the broader metaverse.
While OpenSimulator has grown increasingly stable over time, it remains a highly complex software system that may exhibit various bugs and quirks—handle with care!
