IFWiki is a wiki containing information about interactive fiction, including IF history, theory, craftsmanship, tools, and figures. IFWiki serves both as a historical record of community knowledge and as a resource guide for playing and creating interactive fiction. What is "Interactive Fiction"? In the past, the term primarily referred to parser-based programs (often called "games," or less commonly "works"), which allowed you to type commands for a character. This character would navigate through a simulated world, typically described in text. These parser-based games were sometimes known as "text adventures." Examples include *Adventure*, *Zork*, *Deadline*, *Planetfall*, *The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy*, *The Hobbit*, and *The Lurking Horror*. More recently, the IF community has expanded the definition of interactive fiction to include choice-based works (sometimes called CYOA). In choice-based IF, players navigate the story by selecting hyperlinks or periodically choosing from a list of options to determine how the story progresses. Some people, when using the term interactive fiction, may include gamebooks and graphic adventure games (such as *Myst*), but these types of works are not the focus of this FAQ nor the primary concern of the IF community.
