Product Information
What is Kate?
The Kate project develops two main products: KatePart (an advanced editor component used in many KDE applications requiring text editing functionality) and Kate (an MDI text editor application). Additionally, we offer KWrite, a simple SDI editor shell that allows users to choose their preferred editor component. Since version 2.2, Kate has been KDE's multi-document editor component. As a KDE application, Kate is network-transparent and integrates seamlessly with KDE's outstanding features. Choose it to view HTML source from Konqueror, edit configuration files, write new applications, or perform any other text editing task—all while needing just a single running instance of Kate.
Using a multi-view editor like Kate offers numerous advantages. You can view multiple instances of the same document, all synchronized in real time, or work with several files simultaneously for easy reference or concurrent editing.
**KWrite**
KWrite is a straightforward text editor application that allows you to edit one file per window at a time. Like Kate, KWrite utilizes the KatePart editor component. KWrite essentially provides the window framework for the selected editor component, enabling you to open and save documents. It shares all the features offered by KatePart—refer to the overview for details.
**Licensing**
Kate is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) version 2. As part of the KDE project, the complete source code can be obtained as described in the article on acquiring it.
