R (programming language)

R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. It is a GNU project similar to the S language and environment, developed by John Chambers and his colleagues at Bell Laboratories (formerly AT&T, now Lucent Technologies). R can be considered a different implementation of S. There are some significant differences, but much of the code written for S runs unaltered under R. R is a comprehensive language, and its suite of applications has become the "de facto" standard, especially in data analysis and data mining. It is particularly well-suited for advanced users who wish to have full control over their tools.
