## X Unveils Algorithm Transparency with Phoenix System
Last week, X released new insights into its feed algorithm, aiming to provide greater transparency into how content is ranked and displayed to users. The platform detailed both positive and negative engagement signals that influence post reach, offering a clearer picture of how its Phoenix algorithm operates.
## How X's Phoenix Algorithm Prioritizes Content
According to Business Insider reporter Truman Dickerson, who analyzed X's source code, the Phoenix algorithm predicts user engagement based on past behavior. The system prioritizes shares above all other interactions, with follows and likes carrying significantly less weight in determining post visibility.
### Positive Engagement Signals
X's algorithm assigns numerical values to different user actions:
- **Copying and sharing a post URL**: 20 points (equivalent to 40 likes)
- **Replies, quotes, and shares via DMs**: 5 points per action
- **Following an account**: 4 points (8 times a like)
- **Reposts**: 1 point
- **Likes**: 0.5 points (the lowest positive indicator)
These metrics, combined with factors like who a user follows and post recency, generate a ranking score that determines what appears in each user's feed.
## Negative Signals and Penalties
The Phoenix algorithm also penalizes content that triggers negative user responses. Surprisingly, reporting a post carries a much heavier penalty than blocking an account:
- **Report**: -234 points
- **Mute**: -59 points
- **'Not interested'**: -43 points
- **Block**: -31 points
While controversial content might generate engagement, accounts risk significant reach penalties if users frequently report or mute their posts.
## Personalized Impact of Algorithm Decisions
X clarified that these penalties apply only to individual users rather than affecting broader reach. A report or block will primarily impact what that specific user sees, with limited influence on overall post visibility for others.
## Strategic Implications for Content Creators
The new insights suggest brands should focus on creating highly shareable content while avoiding divisive posts that might trigger negative responses. Understanding target audience preferences remains crucial for maximizing reach under X's current algorithm structure.
