WhatsApp Enhances Security with Passkeys and Alphanumeric Passwords
WhatsApp Expands Security Features with Passkeys and Stronger Passwords
WhatsApp is rolling out enhanced security measures, including expanded passkey support and alphanumeric passwords for two-step verification. The updates aim to provide users with stronger protection against unauthorized access and scams.
Multi-Passkey Support for Enhanced Security
Since introducing passkeys in 2023, WhatsApp has seen over one billion users adopt the feature for securing account access and backups. The latest update allows users to add multiple passkeys per account on both Android and iOS devices, offering greater flexibility and redundancy.
Stronger Two-Step Verification
WhatsApp is replacing its six-digit PIN system with longer, alphanumeric passwords that can include special characters. The company stated:
“Two-step verification is an extra protection layer that helps prevent someone from taking over your account, even if they get hold of your one-time passcode. Until now it was a six-digit PIN, we’ve now upgraded it to a full password: longer, alphanumeric, and even with special ch@racters to make it harder to guess.”
This change significantly increases the possible password combinations, making brute-force attacks far more difficult.
Improved Call Screening to Combat Scams
WhatsApp is also enhancing call screening by displaying additional context for incoming calls from non-contacts. On Android, users will see details such as:
- Whether the caller’s number is from a different country
- Shared group memberships
These improvements help users identify potential scam calls and reduce unwanted interruptions.
WhatsApp’s Ongoing Security Focus
With privacy and security as core priorities, WhatsApp continues refining its protections to maintain trust among its global user base. The latest updates reinforce its commitment to safeguarding private communications.
