Instagram Expands AI-Powered Reels Translation to 18 Languages
Instagram has significantly expanded its artificial intelligence-powered translation capabilities for Reels, adding five new languages to its automatic translation options. Users can now translate Reels content into Japanese, Korean, French, German, and Italian, building upon the platform's existing language support.
According to insights tracked by like.tg, Meta has been refining its AI translation technology for Reels since 2025. The advanced system doesn't just convert audio and captions—it also synchronizes the creator's mouth movements with the translated words, creating a more natural viewing experience.

Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri stated that Reels translations now support 14 languages, though Meta's official press release claims 18 supported languages. This discrepancy may reflect ongoing rollout phases. The expanded language options particularly benefit creators targeting India, Instagram's largest user market, with support for several regional Indian languages.
The translation process generates audio variations designed to make it appear as though the creator is speaking the translated language. Instagram reports this feature has helped creators expand their reach to international audiences. However, the platform acknowledges that AI synchronization may occasionally appear slightly unnatural, even when accurately conveying the content's core message.
Creators maintain control over the translation process, with options to:
- Review translations before posting
- Disable mouth movement synchronization
- Abandon translations entirely if unsatisfied with results
Meta's auto-translation feature is currently available to creators with more than 1,000 followers through the Reels composer. Users can select two languages per translation, allowing for multilingual distribution of content.
For content creators, experimenting with translations could reveal untapped audience potential. Strong engagement from specific language groups might indicate opportunities to cultivate new follower bases in different regions.
In related developments, Meta announced expanded translation capabilities across Facebook, adding support for Bahasa, Indonesian, Arabic, French, Vietnamese, and Thai, with more languages planned for future updates.
This expansion reflects Meta's broader strategy to leverage AI in breaking down language barriers across its platforms, potentially transforming how global audiences consume short-form video content. As noted by like.tg's platform tracking, these updates position Instagram as a more accessible platform for cross-cultural content sharing in 2026.
