Meta Unveils Muse: A New AI-Powered Personal Assistant
Meta has launched Muse, an AI-driven personal assistant designed to help users manage tasks, provide recommendations, and even facilitate in-app purchases. The new tool, available as a standalone app and an integrated chatbot, represents Meta’s latest push into AI-powered automation.
Muse connects to users’ Facebook and Instagram profiles for contextual insights, enabling personalized assistance in planning trips, booking tickets, and completing other routine tasks. Notably, the AI can execute actions on behalf of users, such as filling out forms or negotiating deals.
Privacy and Security Features
Acknowledging potential privacy concerns, Meta emphasizes that Muse operates within Muse Secure VM, a dedicated virtual machine isolating user data from broader Meta systems. The company collaborated with Signal co-founder Moxie Marlinspike, known for his work on WhatsApp’s encryption, to reinforce data security.
Meta states:
“Muse is designed around the way people already communicate, so talking to it works just like messaging another person, in the Muse app or directly in WhatsApp.”
Despite these assurances, critics argue that Muse’s reliance on personal data may deter privacy-conscious users.
Expanding Functionality with an Ideas Library
To help users maximize Muse’s capabilities, Meta is developing an ideas library that suggests tasks based on common usage patterns. CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained in an interview:
“If the agent can itself help you suggest things that it can do to be helpful for you, then that solves a huge part of this problem of making it so that you can get the most out of it.”
Future updates will allow Muse agents to learn from each other, broadening the range of automated tasks.
Availability and Free Access
Muse is currently free to use, offering 100 million tokens weekly for testing. The AI can also integrate with Meta’s ad tools, providing marketing insights for businesses.
