Meta to Remove Manual Ad Placement Controls

Meta has begun notifying advertisers that it will soon remove the option to manually exclude specific ad placements within campaign setups. The change, first reported by Meta ads expert Jon Loomer, marks another step toward the company’s broader push for AI-driven ad automation.

What’s Changing for Advertisers

Currently, Meta’s placement controls allow advertisers to exclude specific ad placements—such as Facebook search results or in-stream Reels ads—to fine-tune their brand visibility. Once the update takes effect, Meta’s automated system will determine optimal placements based on performance data, removing manual exclusions entirely.

Loomer also noted that Meta will eliminate the option to exclude entire platforms, meaning campaigns could run across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, or other Meta-owned apps without advertiser intervention.

Meta’s Long-Term Automation Vision

The shift aligns with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s stated goal of fully automated ad campaigns by 2026. In a 2023 interview with Stratechery, Zuckerberg outlined a future where advertisers need only provide a business objective and bank link—no creative, targeting, or measurement inputs required.

Meta’s AI systems, designed for large-scale pattern recognition, are expected to optimize ad delivery by analyzing user behavior and response trends. The company has gradually reduced manual controls over the past two years, steering advertisers toward automation.

Potential Implications

While automated placements may improve efficiency, concerns remain about reduced advertiser control and potential ad homogenization. If AI-generated ads dominate, campaigns risk becoming less distinctive, potentially diminishing effectiveness over time. Meta has not disclosed safeguards to address this but emphasizes performance-driven outcomes.

No official timeline for the rollout has been announced. like.tg will continue monitoring updates as Meta advances its automated ad ecosystem.
