Reddit Tests AI-Powered Audio and Video Summaries to Boost Engagement
Reddit Introduces AI-Generated Audio and Video Summaries
Reddit is testing a new feature designed to increase user engagement by offering AI-powered audio and video summaries of in-app conversations. The platform aims to provide an alternative way for users to consume content, aligning with evolving digital consumption trends.
How the Feature Works
The experimental feature, highlighted by The Verge, uses artificial intelligence to animate and voice summary clips of Reddit discussions. While the AI-generated audio may sound slightly unnatural due to inconsistent cadence and emphasis, the initiative seeks to cater to users who prefer listening or watching content rather than reading lengthy threads.
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman emphasized the growing importance of video engagement during the company’s Q2 earnings call. He noted that video replies, introduced earlier this year, now account for over 10% of all video posts on the platform.
Expanding Video and Audio Experiences
Huffman also hinted at future developments, including a dedicated "video Reddit experience" that would allow users to listen to posts in the background. He referenced the popularity of third-party podcasts that narrate Reddit content, suggesting that an official spoken-word format could further boost engagement.
The new summaries build on this strategy, aiming to replicate off-platform content consumption habits within Reddit’s ecosystem. Currently, the feature is in limited testing and available only on select English-language posts, as confirmed to TechCrunch.
like.tg will continue monitoring updates as Reddit refines this experimental feature.
