TikTok Explores U.S. Expansion of In-App Payments Feature
TikTok Considers U.S. Rollout of TikTok Pay
As X continues refining its X Money payment system, TikTok is reportedly exploring the expansion of its TikTok Pay feature to U.S. users. According to a Bloomberg report, the platform is testing the ability for users to send money directly through direct messages (DMs).
Currently, TikTok Pay is operational in Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand, where it facilitates in-app purchases. The platform also offers TikTok PayLater in select markets, allowing users to split payments into installments.
Potential Impact on In-App Commerce
Integrating direct payments could significantly boost TikTok’s e-commerce performance, particularly during livestreams. The feature mirrors the success of Douyin Pay—the Chinese version of TikTok—where livestream-driven transactions accounted for over 40% of total e-commerce sales in 2024, as reported by ScienceDirect.
TikTok’s Growing U.S. Commerce Ambitions
TikTok’s U.S. shopping activity has surged, with $11.8 billion in gross merchandise volume (GMV) recorded in H1 2026—a 100%+ year-over-year increase, per Momentum Works. Expanding TikTok Pay could further streamline transactions, though the company may need to secure money transmitter licenses across U.S. states first.
