Meta Marketing API Adds Audience Per Creative
Meta Adds an Audience Option to Its Marketing API
Meta has added a new element to its Marketing API that lets third-party platforms assign a specific audience to each creative element. The company says the option could help guide Meta’s system when it targets promotions.
The change is described in a post on Meta’s developer site: Choose an audience for each ad creative. Beginning this week, marketers can set the age range and gender details that each piece of media is best suited for.
Age and Gender Details Marketers Can Attach
Meta explained the option with two examples. “For example: Financial services might decide retirement-planning videos are best suited for people aged 50–65, and savings account videos are best suited for all ages. Fashion retailers might decide images of women’s sweaters are best suited for women, and images of men’s sweaters are best suited for men.”
Those details sit on the creative itself. A financial advertiser could mark a retirement-planning video as better suited to people aged 50–65, while treating a savings-account video as suitable for all ages. A fashion retailer could mark images of women’s sweaters as better suited to women and images of men’s sweaters as better suited to men.
Creative-Level Settings Versus the Ad Set
The new element places those targeting details on the creative rather than inside the ad set. Meta’s ad targeting systems can then ensure the right visuals are linked to each promotion.
The update is presented as a straightforward way to focus ad targeting so more relevant visuals are displayed to each user. Meta’s ad targeting tools might already be able to detect these details from the full listing information for each product. Even so, the ability to explicitly target each creative element could drive more relevant ad placements.
A Possible Effect on Gift-Related Ads
The same restriction could also affect the use of Meta ads to reach people who may be buying gifts for somebody else. The upcoming shopping season, for example, will see a lot of people buying gifts for others. Whether limiting ad creative to certain audiences has an impact in that setting remains an open question.
Relevance Across Meta’s Apps
From a general perspective, adding audience information to creative elements could help ensure that more relevant ads are shown to the right people across Meta’s apps. The option gives third-party platforms a direct way to state which age range and gender each media asset is best suited for, instead of leaving that match only to the ad set or to details Meta’s systems might infer from a product listing.
