Meta Releases Executive Interview on Data Center Strategy

Meta published an interview with its VP of Data Centers Rachel Peterson on Thursday, addressing rising backlash over the company's extensive data center developments across the U.S. The discussion, available via Meta's official site, focuses on the benefits of these expansions and Meta's aim to support local economies.

In the 16-minute video, Peterson explains the company's approach to data center development, including key considerations in the planning process.

AI Goals Driving Infrastructure Expansion

Peterson highlighted Meta's objective of providing "personal superintelligence" to everyone, which she noted would demand significant data processing capabilities to advance the company's artificial intelligence initiatives.

She described her personal perspective on personal superintelligence as "having the utmost experts who understand your unique preferences, your unique ways of wanting to operate, that is personalized to you, that makes you the most effective and efficient person that you can be."

To enable this level of personalization and utility on a large scale, Meta's AI tools require substantial data processing capacity. This need has prompted Meta to accelerate its data center projects, with a commitment of more than $600 billion to U.S. data center initiatives over the next three years.

Peterson stated that the majority of Meta's data center development efforts have been launched over the past two years as the company has intensified its program.

Negative Impacts and Community Backlash

These projects have generated negative effects in certain areas. In Morgan County, Georgia, Meta's data center activities have resulted in water contamination and utilities disruptions, leading Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to advocate for restrictions on the development through a press release.

In Fayetteville, Georgia, Politico reported that an AI infrastructure project drained 30 million gallons of unmetered water, affecting local residents. In Northern Virginia, data center operations in Loudoun and Fairfax counties consumed nearly 2 billion gallons of water in 2023, according to The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. This usage compelled local water authorities to depend more on potable water instead of reclaimed water for cooling purposes.

The backlash from communities has contributed to a notable decrease in support for such projects, even as companies like Meta emphasize potential long-term economic advantages.

A recent Time Magazine report indicates that only a third of Americans approve of the current pace of data center development. Additionally, more than 300 cities, towns, and counties have implemented bans or moratoriums on constructing hyperscale data centers.

On July 18, a national day of protest against data centers involved 142 protests across 42 states.

Meta's Efforts to Mitigate Impacts

To address these concerns, Peterson explained that Meta's site selection process evaluates factors such as power, water, and labor availability to ensure efficient construction.

She emphasized Meta's commitment to community integration, stating that the chosen locations must be places where the company can establish roots for 20 years and actively participate in the community.

Peterson noted that Meta strives to restore more water than it consumes and collaborates with utility grid providers in data center areas to secure necessary resources while minimizing effects on local residents.

She added that Meta's infrastructure support efforts sometimes actually bring down utilities costs in some locations.
