LinkedIn Launches New Word Puzzle Game 'Wend'

Wend on LinkedIn

LinkedIn continues its expansion into casual gaming with the launch of Wend, a new word puzzle game that blends traditional word search mechanics with Wordle-inspired gameplay. This marks the eighth puzzle game added to the professional networking platform since it first ventured into gaming.

How Wend Works

The game presents players with a letter grid and a hidden list of target words. Unlike conventional word searches, Wend only reveals the word lengths, requiring players to deduce both the words and their placement through logical deduction. Each letter in the grid is used exactly once in the solution, incorporating Sudoku-like constraints.

Helen Smith, LinkedIn's Group Product Manager for Games, explains: "Wend challenges players to think differently by combining word finding with logic-based problem solving. You're not just identifying words—you're solving how the entire grid fits together as a cohesive puzzle."

LinkedIn's Growing Gaming Portfolio

Wend follows March 2025's addition of Patches, a pattern-matching puzzle game. The platform's gaming suite now includes:

  • Word-based puzzles (Wend, Crossclimb)
  • Number games (Queens, Pinpoint)
  • Visual puzzles (Inference, Pinpoint, Patches)

Why Gaming on a Professional Platform?

While puzzle games might seem unconventional for a career-focused network, LinkedIn reports strong engagement:

  • Millions of professionals play daily (exact figures undisclosed)
  • 86% of players return the next day
  • 82% retention after seven days

Smith notes the social benefits: "Puzzle solves often spark professional conversations—shared scores become networking opportunities." The games allow users to challenge connections, potentially strengthening work relationships through friendly competition.

The Casual Gaming Trend

Like.tg analysts observe this aligns with broader trends:

  • Wordle's 2022 explosion demonstrated demand for daily puzzle formats
  • Professionals seek brief mental breaks during work hours
  • Simple games provide stress relief amid information overload

While LinkedIn hasn't disclosed monetization plans, the high retention suggests gaming could become a sticky feature that increases platform engagement. For now, all games remain ad-free and accessible to all members.

Wend is available now within LinkedIn's gaming section, joining seven other puzzles that collectively represent the platform's surprising evolution into professional networking with a playful twist.
