X Introduces Number Access Codes for Direct Messages

X has officially rolled out a new number access option for XChat, allowing users to share numeric codes to initiate direct messages (DMs) with non-connections. The feature, which was tested earlier this month, enables recipients to send messages and start audio or video calls without requiring mutual follows or message request approvals.

How X’s Number Access Works

The numeric codes function as temporary access keys, facilitating communication with event attendees, business contacts, or potential clients. X clarifies that these codes are not phone numbers and differ from its existing safety number system, which verifies secure messaging.

According to X’s documentation:

"People who’ve exchanged messages with you can see your X Number and share it. Anyone with the code can message or call you while it’s active, even without a follow."

Users can disable or regenerate codes at any time and hide them from public visibility.

Uncertainty Around XChat’s Future

The launch follows X’s removal of the standalone XChat app from Apple and Google Play stores last week, just four months after its April debut. While X aims to consolidate features into its "everything app," the abrupt shutdown raises questions about its messaging strategy.
