TikTok Strengthens Child Safety Measures with New Partnerships

TikTok USDS JV, the corporate entity managing TikTok’s U.S. operations, announced two major partnerships on Tuesday aimed at bolstering child protection initiatives and improving detection of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The collaborations align with broader industry efforts to enhance online safety for minors.

Joining Lantern for Cross-Platform CSAM Detection

TikTok has joined Lantern, a centralized reporting platform launched in 2023 by the Tech Coalition, which facilitates data-sharing among participating platforms to identify and combat CSAM. According to Lantern’s website, the initiative helps uncover abuse patterns and strengthens enforcement across digital services.

TikTok now stands alongside 38 other companies, including Meta, Google, Discord, Reddit, X (formerly Twitter), Snap, and Twitch, in contributing to Lantern’s mission. The platform’s participation underscores its commitment to industry-wide collaboration in tackling harmful content.

Expanded Partnership with NCMEC and $2M Investment

In a second major move, TikTok has deepened its collaboration with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). The partnership includes enhanced data-sharing to support legal enforcement against CSAM-related activities.

Additionally, TikTok has pledged $2 million in funding to modernize NCMEC’s CyberTipline, a critical reporting system for online exploitation. The investment will help transform the legacy system into an AI-powered infrastructure, enabling faster detection, reduced manual processing times, and quicker law enforcement responses.

TikTok stated: “Our contribution directly supports NCMEC’s three-year campaign to deploy advanced search, automation, and analysis tools—ensuring quicker action when a child’s safety is at risk.”

Industry Context and Meta’s Influence

The announcement follows Meta’s recent $18 billion settlement in a child protection lawsuit, which included calls for TikTok and YouTube to adopt stricter teen safety measures. While TikTok has not yet implemented usage time limits for teens, its latest initiatives signal a proactive approach to aligning with industry standards and mitigating regulatory scrutiny.
