Meta Updates Threads Ad Creation Process

Meta has announced significant changes to its Threads ad creation process, removing the requirement for advertisers to maintain matching usernames on both Threads and Instagram. Starting in September 2026, businesses will no longer need an Instagram presence to launch ads on Threads, allowing them to promote directly through their native Threads profiles.

Previously, Threads ads were tightly integrated with Instagram, requiring advertisers to align their identities across both platforms. This update reflects Threads' growing independence as a standalone platform with over 500 million users.

Key Changes for Advertisers

No More Matching Usernames

Meta confirmed that businesses will no longer need synchronized usernames between Threads and Instagram to run ads. This shift enables brands to focus exclusively on Threads campaigns without maintaining an Instagram profile.

Direct Threads Ad Access

Advertisers without an Instagram account can now launch promotions directly through Threads. Meta stated, “Businesses operating without an Instagram profile will also be able to launch ads on Threads directly using their native Threads profile.”

Threads’ Growing Independence

Meta has been gradually separating Threads from Instagram to establish it as a distinct platform. Earlier steps included detaching Instagram graph insights from Threads’ onboarding process. However, Threads still partially relies on Instagram engagement metrics for user interest analysis.

With 500 million active users, Threads offers advertisers access to a different audience than Instagram. Meta acknowledges the need to further differentiate the platforms, as user behavior varies significantly between them.

Rollout Timeline

The updated ad creation process is being introduced gradually and may not be immediately available to all advertisers. Meta continues refining Threads’ advertising tools to enhance its appeal as an independent marketing channel.
