X Discontinues Standalone XChat App

X has removed its separate XChat messaging app from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, signaling a shift toward consolidating features within its main platform. The company voluntarily unlisted the app late last week, according to reports from 9to5Mac.

Launched in April 2024 after months of beta testing, XChat initially appeared to contradict CEO Elon Musk’s vision of transforming X into an all-in-one "everything app." The standalone messaging platform included encrypted messaging features, possibly as part of X’s broader strategy to secure regulatory approvals for financial services.

Regulatory Strategy Behind XChat’s Removal

The decision to remove XChat suggests that the app may have been a temporary measure to address regulatory concerns. X had previously faced rejections for money transmitter licenses in several U.S. states. However, in July 2024, the company announced a partnership with Cross River Bank to facilitate X Money transactions, eliminating the need for a separate messaging app.
