YouTube Declines Meta's Proposal for Shared Teen Usage Limits

YouTube has rejected Meta’s proposal to implement joint restrictions on teen social media usage, with CEO Neal Mohan stating that the platform already has sufficient safety measures in place.

Meta recently agreed to pay over $18 billion in penalties to settle a lawsuit brought by a bipartisan group of attorneys general regarding social media harms. As part of the settlement, Meta committed to enforcing new restrictions for users under 18, including a two-hour daily usage limit and a default block on its apps between midnight and 6 a.m.

Meta’s Attempt to Expand Restrictions

Meta’s settlement included a clause that would extend its teen usage restrictions from five to ten years—but only if both YouTube and TikTok agreed to implement similar measures. The proposal also involved financial contributions from the two platforms toward the settlement.

However, during YouTube’s annual Made On showcase event, Mohan confirmed that the platform would not participate in Meta’s initiative. He emphasized that YouTube has already invested in robust parental controls and collaborates with child safety experts to ensure best practices.

YouTube’s Independent Approach

Mohan argued that YouTube’s platform differs significantly from Meta’s apps, requiring a tailored approach to teen safety. While both YouTube and TikTok were implicated in the same lawsuit concerning teen harms, neither has agreed to Meta’s terms.

Earlier this month, TikTok reportedly rejected Meta’s ads urging collaboration, signaling a likely refusal to join the initiative. Meta’s push for industry-wide restrictions appears to be an effort to share accountability amid ongoing scrutiny over teen safety concerns.
